Review Shut Door & Sword of the Lord

(Wilfred) Now last week we were dealing with things that I thought I didn’t do a very good job of and I’ve got mixed reactions to it. We talked a little bit about the shut door and the visions Sister White had in connection with it. I didn’t have a chance to really go through the tape in detail but I did listen to it more casually and I got the feeling that it could have been a little confusing. So I thought I would take just a few minutes at the beginning of this session and just crystallize what really happened there as nearly as we can gather it from the information that we have.


You remember that the Midnight Cry went before 1844 and the Cry was, behold, the Bridegroom cometh. Referring back to the parable of the ten virgins and five of them discovered they didn’t have oil for their lamps. So they ran off quickly to get some oil and they came back too late, meanwhile the other five had gone with Him into the marriage and the door was shut. Now that’s the first idea of the shut door. But Sister White points out in Great Controversy that this parable and the movement of Christ from the holy apartment to the most holy apartment in the heavenly sanctuary are one and the same thing. So they got the idea after the disappointment in 1844 that if the door was shut nobody else could come in. Therefore the door of mercy for sinners must be past and they went along with this idea for several weeks after the 1844 disappointment including Mrs. White and this was before she had any visions. Now there are statements relative to this given by her husband and also by herself and the statements don’t entirely seem to lineup and that’s where some people have sort of picked up a discrepancy and making some kind of an issue of it which I am not too sure is justifiable. But the fact is that by the time she had her first vision according to her husband in a published article in 1847 they had given up the Midnight Cry as being in the past and being fulfilled totally in 1844 but that it was still future. In other words, the door was not really shut at that time. Did you get that? That was the idea that they had after 1844 according to her husband’s description.

I’ll quote the words; “When she received her first vision December 1844 she and all the band in Portland Maine” That means the group. "Where her parents resided, had given up the Midnight Cry and shut door as being in the past. It was then that the Lord showed her in vision the error into which she and the band in Portland had fallen." In December she got that vision. And supposedly that showed her and the band that they had fallen into this error that the door was not really shut, that it was still future. That was the error they had fallen into. That it really was shut was the message the first vision gave to them. That’s the way they interpreted the first vision. The Midnight Cry was a light behind them, remember? But it did shine on their pathway ahead. Now whether you think of it in terms of interpretation or not doesn’t really matter too much to me, in my thinking, theologically. But there is another statement that was written later for publication which seems to give a different impression.

And that is found in 1 Selective Messages page 63.

“For a time after the disappointment in 1844, I did hold, in common with the advent body, that the door of mercy was then forever closed to the world. This position was taken before my first vision was given me. It was the light given me of God that corrected our error, and enabled us to see the true position.”


Now what do you get from that? Well, I don’t know if you get what I get but it is just the opposite I get from the other statement.

(John) Yes.

(Wilfred) Here you see the Advent body believed after 1844 that the door of mercy was then forever closed. But that was before her first vision then she says the light given to her of God, she doesn’t necessarily say that it was just the first vision. That’s very carefully put here. That corrected their error and enabled them to see the true position, but she doesn’t explain the true position. She does go on to say there was a shut door in Noah’s day, there was a shut door in Abraham’s day, there was a shut door in Christ’s day, and so on. Which would seem to indicate that she meant that the true position is that the door is shut. Yet the statement doesn’t seem to say that, do you understand?

Now let me read from one of her own letters which was written to Joseph Bates and I read you this last week but I just want to recapitulate this so that we get it a little clearer.

Dear Brother Bates: July 13, 1847                           

She says; “Brother Bates, you write in a letter to James something about the Bridegroom's coming, as stated in the first published visions. By the letter you would like to know whether I had light on the Bridegroom's coming before I saw it in vision. I can readily answer, No. The Lord showed me the travail of the Advent band and midnight cry in December,” That was her first vision which we read last week. ”But He did not show me the Bridegroom's coming until February following. Perhaps you would like to have me give a statement in relation to both visions.” Now listen. “At the time I had the vision of the midnight cry” That was in December. “I had given it up in the past and thought it future, as also most of the band had.” Now the only way I can put those statements together is that immediately after 1844 they believed that the door was shut and that they believed that there was no more mercy for sinners. But by the time the first vision was given somewhere between October and December most of the band had given up that idea and had accepted the idea that the door of mercy must still be open. And that the Midnight Cry can’t possibly be in the past it must be in the future and they had figured that out on their own thinking. Do you understand? Then the Lord gave her the first vision that she says corrected their error. Which her husband said corrected their error. Did you see that? Now what was the error?

(Larry) That the door was closed in 1844. That is what they previously thought.

(John) That wasn’t the error, the error was that they had given up the idea.

(Another man) They changed from that back to the other one.

(Wilfred) That’s the way I understand it. The error into which they had fallen, they originally had the correct view that the door was shut, they fell into an error. Then the Lord gave her a vision and that was the vision she didn’t want to tell, she thought they wouldn’t take it, remember? And she thought that nobody would believe it, that she would be cutting across this man Turner and his views and he wanted to know the vision. He wanted to know whether she was in the way of the Lord, you know? Whether she had anything and she didn’t want to admit to him and yet he had already understood the point but he had understood that the Lord wanted him to go to that meeting that night where Sister White would give him some information. So he was asking Sister Whiter if she wasn’t going to go to the meeting and she didn’t want to go. She didn’t want to tell it she thought she was going to cut across him. But he didn’t admit as to what his view was and he went to the meeting and he gave his view instead. And when Sister White learned what he had given and she realized that the Lord had wanted her to give that vision she repented and at the next meeting she gave it.

Now, what was the vision? That the Midnight Cry, the light, was in the past. That was the Midnight Cry but the light did shine along the pathway into the future. That was the vision. Then in February she got the vision about the bridegroom who moved from the holy apartment into the most holy where the Commandments are and the law. Do you understand? Now what happened? The door was shut to the holy apartment but the door to the most holy apartment was opened so there was both a shut door and an open door.

Then in 1849 she got another vision and these are the three main ones that I think deal with this subject that I have been able to locate.

Sabbath March 24, 1849 and this is the time when she had this corroborated. She saw that the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ relating to the shut door could not be separated. So the shut door they had back there in 1844 about the Midnight Cry and the Bridegroom going in and shutting the door cannot be separated from the ten commandments, now how can that be? What’s the relationship? Well she saw that in this vision. She says that the time for the commandments of God to shine out with all their importance and for God’s people to be tried on the Sabbath truth was when the door was opened in the most holy place in the heavenly sanctuary where the Ark is in which are contained the ten commandments. This door was not opened until the mediation of Jesus was finished in the holy place of the sanctuary in 1844, this is on page 42 of Early Writings.

“Then Jesus rose up and shut the door of the holy place, and opened the door into the most holy, and passed within the second veil, where He now stands by the ark, and where the faith of Israel now reaches.”

“I saw that Jesus had shut the door of the holy place, and no man can open it; and that He had opened the door into the most holy, and no man can shut it and that since Jesus has opened the door into the most holy place, which contains the ark, the commandments have been shining out to God's people, and they are being tested on the Sabbath question.”

 
“I saw that the present test on the Sabbath could not come until the mediation of Jesus in the holy place was finished and He had passed within the second veil; therefore Christians who fell asleep before the door was opened into the most holy, when the midnight cry was finished, at the seventh month, 1844, and who had not kept the true Sabbath, now rest in hope;” So, the door was shut, the midnight cry was in the past, but for those who had not seen the commandments prior to that time, that had not had the test, they still rest in hope. And anybody who still goes to the grave since 1844 and doesn’t understand, they still rest in hope for she says, they had not the light and the test on the Sabbath which we now have since that door was opened. Yes, we now have it. Who has it? Those that understand it have it, that’s right. Those who don’t understand it don’t have it.
She “Saw that Satan was tempting some of God's people on this point. Because so many good Christians have fallen asleep in the triumphs of faith and have not kept the true Sabbath, they were doubting about it’s being a test for us now.”

“The enemies of the present truth have been trying to open the door of the holy place, that Jesus has shut, and to close the door of the most holy place, which He opened in 1844, where the ark is, containing the two tables of stone on which are written the ten commandments by the finger of Jehovah.”


I’m going to just summarize here a thought. They were trying to open the door to the holy apartment again. What door was that? Well, that was the door of mercy to sinners. Sinners who did not understand about the commandments of God. Sinners who simple saw that by faith we are saved, by grace we are saved through faith and that not of ourselves it is a gift of God. They understood imputed righteousness and they are accepted of God. And what does Sister White say in 1 Selected Messages later on? That if they had not attained to the fullness of the understanding of all the truth at whatever point they are ... What does she say? He well make up for their deficiencies with His own divine merit. Now she is saying here that some people are trying to go back to open up that door again. Just the way it was and Satan is tempting them on this point. Now do you get the implication of that? That anybody whether he’s in our denomination or out of it who is preaching imputed righteousness today without giving the rest of it, imparted righteousness is doing a service to the devil. That’s what it amounts to. Because we are now living in what kind of a time? The testing time. The testing time as she says here. The Day of Atonement when the sanctuary is to be cleansed of sin and sin is the transgression of the law. And if you don’t bring the law into it, where’s the cleansing of sin from the sanctuary? Where are the sins that have been confessed? In the heavenly sanctuary, in which apartment? The first apartment and they are taken care of in the sense that the Lord has forgiven those sins. But now they’re not finished those sins are still in the sanctuary. They have to be cleansed out of the sanctuary. Did you get that? That’s the work of the Day of Atonement, which started in 1844.


Now don’t forget what this all means. This isn’t just a picture of a building in heaven with people working in there and blood being sprinkled around. That’s the lesson book, that’s the sand table that you teach the kindergarten with, don’t you see?

What is the true temple? There are two true temples. One is Christ and one is his saints. And if you will believe it, in the marriage union they become one. And that temple is to be cleansed. It is a joint proposition. Where are the sins, who is carrying them?
 
(John) Jesus.

(Wilfred) Jesus. Where are they recorded with reference to the saints? Right here, inside that skull is where they are. Now when the marriage takes place they are gong to be in one place because the Bible says, that they twain shall be one flesh. Ephesians chapter 4. And Paul says this is a great mystery but I’m speaking concerning Christ and his Church. Christ and his Church are twain to become one flesh, on temple, one body, can you understand that. I am interested in you getting the point.

What is the point? The point is that since 1844 Christ entered into a new type of work. The cleansing of the sanctuary of the sins that are all ready recorded there. And you know the outcome, as He leaves what does He do with them?

(John) Places them on the head of the scapegoat.

(Wilfred) Why does He do that?

(John) He is the one responsible for the sins committed since 1844.

(Wilfred) That’s the point. And I think I have it a little bit stronger then that here someplace. In Great Controversy page 485.

“As the priest in removing the sins from the sanctuary confessed them upon the head of the scapegoat,” That’s back in the old service in ancient Israel’s day. “So Christ will place all these sins upon Satan, the originator and instigator of sin.” So why does the devil have to take these things on him?

(John) He is the instigator.

(Wilfred) Because he instigates those things. “So Satan is to bear the guilt of all the sins which he has caused God's people to commit,” Now there are really two beings involved in the commission of sin. The devil instigates and causes but he cannot force you to sin. Then if you do sin you have some responsibility too. You made the wrong decision. We better not get hung up on that though. The fact is that Satan is going to bear his fair share in your sin. If he had not been there to bring the temptation to bear you would not have made the wrong decision. In spite of the fact that you didn’t have to make the wrong decision. If the devil hadn’t been there you would not had made it. But since the devil was there he tripped you up and you made the wrong decision and he is going to bear the consequence of that.

Now can you see the significance of moving the sin from Christ to the devil? Christ is taking the responsibility now. People who are ignorant of God’s character and his plan of salvation accuse God for all the things that are going wrong in the world. Am I right? Therefore in that sense he takes the responsibility. Who else is there to take it? And He’ll bear that responsibility until He proves that He is not guilty. And He is going to prove He is not guilty through you. When you decide to honor Him with obedience He is then going to be able to prove that the sin you’ve committed was caused by the devil. And details again? No, I can’t give you details. But the book is being written and I venture to say that there are things like this going on. One day the Lord says to my guardian angel and to all the helpers He may need to handle the situation. Take care of Wilf Johnson today don’t let the devil get near him. And we’ll put him into situations where he will have the opportunity to sin, but the devil can’t get at him. Do you follow my point? Now is he going to sin or isn’t he going to sin? And if he does sin who’s fault is it? His own. His own choice. On other days the Lord may say to my guardian angel and all the other angels that may be assisting him, let the devil at him today. Just like he did with Peter on the eve of the crucifixion, Let the devil get at him today. Let’s put him into the same situations and see what happens. You know what happens don’t you? Well I do. I flunk out. Now what has the Lord proved?

(John) That the devil’s responsible.

(Wilfred) That’s it, if the devil weren’t there Wilf Johnson wouldn’t have sinned. Now I’m postulating here but I am trying to get a point across. The Lord is demonstrating before the universe the character of Wilf Johnson. He is being investigated in the judgment. Do you follow? He is being judged. And at the same time who else is being judged?

(John) You.

(Another man) Satan is.

(Wilfred) Yes, both of them.

Now, when the Lord shows that I won’t sin if the devil can’t get at me what’s He really proving? That it’s the devil’s fault. Then where does He stand with reference to the guilt? Clear, although there is one other point, He has to prove that He was righteous in deciding to create Lucifer and letting him live so long. He’s got to prove that and He will.

Now, we didn’t quite finish over here. I was summarizing.

The first apartment. The door to the first apartment is the door that opens God’s mercy to sinners and if they accept Him and his forgiveness they are registered in the Lamb’s book of life and He accepts the penalty of their transgression, and the guilt, and what have you. He has already died the death for those sins now it remains to simply clear his record of the accusation and that comes through the judgment of God’s people and the victory over sin.

But what about this other door that is open now to the most holy? What does that mean? Well it simply means that those whose sins have gone in the holy apartment are now given an opportunity to have their sanctuary cleansed. The door to the most holy is open to them. And it’s a testing time on what?

(John) The commandments.

(Wilfred) Whether you will keep them or you will not. Imparted righteousness, if you please. And the choice is yours. The door is open, the door of mercy is still open for you. But that door to the holy apartment is shut. And I pointed out to you last week and I’ll point it out again, then what about those who didn’t get in there on time? What happened to the five who didn’t have the oil?

(John) The door was shut.

(Wilfred) By the time they got back the door was shut. Now I’m not prepared to explain that to you tonight. I brought that problem to you last week and I bring it to you again. I think you need to be aware of it because it is a very significant point. Why did Sister White then subsequent to these visions eventually come out and say that the door to lost sinners was still open that God’s mercy was still available? And the message was to go to all the world to save sinners. Why? The Bible says that the gospel is to go to all the world to what?

(John) As a witness.

(Wilfred) As a witness. If the gospel is to go to all the world as a witness it becomes a testing point doesn’t it? Now what is the gospel that is to go to all the world through the Advent people since 1844?

(John) The commandments of God.

(Wilfred) Come on. The gospel of salvation from sin. The keeping of the commandments of God. Where the Sabbath is the testing point. You got that? Now that gospel of the restored Kingdom, the Kingdom in which God’s people voluntarily come back to allegiance to Him so that his kingdom is restored He now has ruler-ship over them again. And I’ve explained to you that He can’t rule over them if they don’t do it voluntarily because He won’t take away their free will. So there is no other way but to win them by a revelation of his love and we’ve gone over all that.

Now that gospel of the Kingdom, the restored Kingdom, Jesus said, must go to all the world for a witness to all nations and then the end will come. But it’s going for a witness to be a test you either accept it or you reject it. So it’s a two-fold message. The gospel is a two-fold message. It’s the gospel of salvation from sin through the imputed righteousness of Christ, Before 1844 there were some people who had accepted that message but when the disappointment came they went back on it and she said there was no more mercy for them. She said that. They had chosen the wrong thing when the test came. And the disappointment is also significant. Why did God choose to do it this way? He wanted to show, for one thing, that a message that is based on a deadline is not going to bring genuine people alone, it’s going to bring lot’s of other stuff in that isn’t genuine because they are seeking only their own interests.

(John) I don’t want to miss the boat in case it’s really going to go.

(Wilfred) Good. Well, that’s what God did and that is never going to happen again. God is not going to make a deadline. He is prolonging probation. He wanted us to be there long ago but He’s prolonging it in mercy. It’s got to be on a voluntary bases. And how is He going to get us to come to time and I’ve gone over that, the great and dreadful day of the Lord is going to start within his own church among his own people. He is going to permit them to taste or share the sufferings of the cross so that they will learn by personal experience the nature of that love that God has in his heart for them that He would endure that suffering and continue to endure it and not cut it off and leave you lost. But He just continues to bear it and continues to shower more and more of his gifts upon you revealing more and more of his goodness and his love and his truth to you. Trying to get you to come to Him out of a response of love. That’s what He is doing. That is the cleansing of the sanctuary. It comes through the power of love, love is the life of Christ, love is the Spirit of Christ, and that is what this Latter Rain out-pouring is all about. So I said there are two aspects to this, there is the aspect of the imputed righteousness and there is the aspect of the imparted righteousness. And it is the call to respond to God’s offer of imparted righteousness that is being given to you right now and it will become a test to you, you will have to make up your mind whether you want to say yes or no to God. And when you say no your name goes out of the book of life. When you say yes, it is retained and God goes about the work of cleansing your sanctuary and He will do it. Who did it back there in ancient Israel’s day? Was it the people that did it?

(Larry) It was the high priest.

(Wilfred) It was the high priest. Who’s going to do it today?

(Larry) Our High Priest.

(Wilfred) And what does the cleansing constitute?

(John) Getting rid of sin.

(Wilfred) Yes, and what is the very basic fundamental sin?’

(John) Selfishness.

(Wilfred) Good for you. And you cannot get rid of it yourself, no way. You were born selfish, you have practiced selfishness all your life and there is only one thing that will knock it out and that is the pure unadulterated love of God. That will knock it out. When you love God enough your selfishness will shrivel up. Fellows if you love that girl enough you will do anything for her no matter how you feel about it. Am I right or wrong? That’s the principle of God’s Kingdom. I rather suspect that is why God gave us some of these experiences in human life. And the devil is capitalizing on it. He’s taking that principle that God has planted as the very principle of salvation and he’s besmirched it and it’s being infiltrated into the minds of everybody through rotten TV programs and rotten books and rotten everything else. And when you talk about love today, how many people understand what it is? One out of a hundred I wonder?

(There is a small skip here)

......wrong word we need to change our vocabulary. What we see in the world today certainly isn’t the love of God, it’s the devil’s counterfeit. And God has got the problem of revealing to his people what true love really is. And sometimes on the outside it’s kind of hard to tell. It’s very difficult to tell. How can you tell what the motive is for somebody doing a kindness to somebody else? How can you tell what the motive is? I’m sure that many times good dear old sisters in the church do these busybody deeds for the report that’s given on Sabbath or for the response and praise that they get. Such a lovely saint.

(Larry) Not only the woman.

(Wilfred) Oh no I mustn’t be discriminatory, men are worse. Can you blame them. Kids go to school, now you study hard so you learn and become somebody. What does it mean to become somebody? Two things. You get status or position, you know? You're up there someplace and money. The more status and the more money, boy, that’s success. He really became something. Is that the way the Bible evaluates a person?

(A women) No.

(Wilfred) So these are the principles that are involved in the cleansing of the sanctuary that God is trying to finish up now in the world. And his church, his people today are his temple, He is waiting for the marriage. When did He go in?

(John) In 1844.

(Wilfred) Yes. And when is it going to be consummated?

(Another man) When we go in with Him.

(Wilfred) That’s right. That’s right, when we go in with Him.

There is a time coming here, page 280 Early Writings, when it will have been accomplished. It’s the finishing up of the Third Angel’s Message where she talks about how the “Angels hurrying to and fro in heaven. An angel with a writer's inkhorn by his side returned from the earth and reported to Jesus that his work was done, and the saints were numbered and sealed.” What’s the work involve? 

(John) Ezekiel 9

(Wilfred) That’s Ezekiel 9 right, it’s the sealing of the saints. “Then I saw Jesus, who had been ministering before the ark containing the Ten Commandments, throw down the censer. He raised His hands, and with a loud voice said, "It is done." Then it goes on to say. "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still" And so on.

“Every case had been decided for life or death. While Jesus had been ministering in the sanctuary, the judgment had been going on for the righteous dead, and then for the righteous living. Christ had received His kingdom,” What does that mean?

(Another man) He had won the allegiance.

(Wilfred) He had won the allegiance of his saints. “Having made the atonement for his people” What does the atonement mean?

(John) There is nothing between them.

(Wilfred) That’s right. At-one-ment, they are now back together their hearts are now in tune, the minds are in tune. Their minds are one with Christ’s mind, their hearts are one with Christ’s heart. The marriage is consummated, they are united, one flesh, they are working together as a unit. Let me read that, it’s right here. “Having made the atonement for His people and blotted out their sins. The subjects of the kingdom were made up. The marriage of the Lamb was consummated.” Could that be any plainer than that? “And the kingdom, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, was given to Jesus and the heirs of salvation, and Jesus was to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.”

She says here that it was through the visions, through the things that the Lord gave her that this error was cleared up. Now I think it was a little more complicated than she described. I honestly believe that Sister White saw a problem here and she didn’t understand it all. And she said only that which she understood and she reported faithfully that what she saw and left it for a future generation. What did she see? She saw that the door was shut and the other door was open. She saw that the Bridegroom had gone into the wedding. Well if the Bridegroom has gone into the wedding five of them didn’t get in, the door was shut and there’s a problem. But the ones who did get in pose another problem, because in one place she says they were guests at the wedding, they had to have the wedding garment examined. In another place she says, that the church is the bride of Christ, so there is another problem.

(John) In one place she said if they are guests they cannot be the bride and in the other place she says they are the bride.

(Wilfred) That’s right, Great Controversy is the first one and Bible Commentary volume 7 is the other one.

Now what was it that I wanted to say here?

(John) I’m sorry.

(Wilfred) That’s all right John it’s just me I’m a little weary tonight.

You understand that it’s easy to lose confidence in Sister White as a prophet when you bump into a thing like that, right? There are things about this shut door that are problematic and you can get hung-up on it like this man that wrote part of this thing that I have. He came to the wrong conclusion on it. He thinks that Sister White made a mistake and we aught to be fair and tell everybody that she made a mistake and I disagree with him, I don’t think she made a mistake. She may have made a mistake in the sense that she fell into the error of not understanding the shut door before she had her vision but can you blame her for that? Hardly. All the rest of the early Adventists did the same thing or nearly all. Then the Lord showed her in vision certain things, what did she do with that? Did she throw that aside and say, No, I was right before? No she didn’t do that. She said, The Lord corrected our error. But then in later statements like the one in 1 Selected Messages it looks like she’s sort of covering up something. She doesn’t bother going into the details of how it went down and up and just exactly what happened, she doesn’t do that. She simple says, through what the Lord showed her the error was cleared up. But there is still a little bit of difficulty as you read that passage and you want to take time to read it yourself and think about it I think you’ll discover that.

Now, the point I want to make here is this, I hope you people aren’t going to lose confidence in Sister White as a true prophet because of those discrepancies of which we have shown two. There are many others in those books. And I want to throw out to you this key thought; It has been my experience, for what’s it’s worth, that those discrepancies constitute the keys that open the door in Orion to vast expanses of truth beyond and if they were not there you’d never get beyond to see it. If all of the things that we have in our message today were closed where would be the door to expanded truth? Do you get the point? It’s when you see some little discrepancy that you should become suspicious, AHHHHH H-e-r-e-’s  a-n-o-t-h-e-r  key, H-e-r-e-‘s a gateway going out into something new. Hang on to both views that contradict, hang on to them both and keep reading and keep studying, keep praying keep your mind open and one of these days you’re going to see it. How do I know that? Well, I know that because I’ve got answers to the problems I brought to you tonight. But I’ll tell you very frankly, I’m hesitant to give them because there's too many closed minds in our denomination and I don’t want to cause controversy, dissension and animosity among people. I don’t want to do that any more than Sister White wanted to give her vision because she thought it might cause problems. And yet there comes a time when, Brother and Sister you’ve got to tell the truth no matter what happens and I think that time’s pretty close now. I think it is pretty close. And what’s it going to do? Well it’s going to do what we were going to study about tonight. It’s going to cause a shaking among God’s people. Let’s face it, you don’t believe it? Well I’ll read it to you again. I’ve read it to you before, many of you, there are some of you who probably haven’t received it. So I’ll read it again. I think you should memorize it.

The angel told Sister White very plainly. In this little article on the shaking in Early Writings starting on page 269. I am not going to read it all, but you can read it yourself. She talks about how the evil angels are crowding in upon God’s people shutting them in with darkness and they can’t see clearly. All right. Some of these problems that we run into are causing some minds to become disturbed and they can’t see clearly, they jump to conclusions that are not right, they can’t put it together, can’t understand it. And they are not satisfied, they try to figure it out, they’ve got to know it, they’ve got this compulsion that they must know everything and so they go at it. And there is an example right there on that paper. So she describes this here and she says how they are trying to make them distrust God and murmur against Him. She says their only safety was in keeping their eyes directed upward. Angels of God had charge over his people and as the poisonous atmosphere of evil angels was pressed around these anxious ones, the heavenly angels were continually wafting their wings over them to scatter the thick darkness. At times she saw that these praying ones as they continued their earnest cries, would receive a ray of light from Jesus. What’s light?

(John) More truth.

(Wilfred) Yes, a little bit more understanding and then that brightens them up a little bit. To encourage their heart she says, and light up their countenances.

“Some, I saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and pleading.” Let me ask you, is this what we are doing? Well when the shaking starts we are going to be doing it. Because it’s going to be tough. And if you don’t believe that you read the second chapter of Joel. And it tells us very plainly there what we aught to be doing. “They seemed indifferent and careless. They were not resisting the darkness around them, and it shut them in like a thick cloud. The angels of God left these and went to the aid of the earnest, praying ones. “I saw angels of God hasten to the assistance of all who were struggling with all their power to resist the evil angels” The angels came to help these see? These people struggling with all their power. “And trying to help themselves by calling upon God with perseverance. But His angels left those who made no effort to help themselves, and I lost sight of them”. 

Now here is the statement that I think you should memorize.

“I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans.” Now that identifies a couple of things to me. It tells me that there is something in the council of the true witness to the Laodiceans that is involved in the shaking. It tells me that. This is page 270 by the way in Early Writings. It also tells me that it’s caused by the straight testimony called forth by the council of the true witness to the Laodiceans. And the true witness to the Laodiceans is Jesus. And the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophesy and Joel tells us back there that when the Holy Spirit is poured out upon his people in the early and the latter rain and your sons and your daughters shall do what?

(John) Prophesy.

(Wilfred) But some people are going to say, No, it’s not right it’s a false prophet I will not bear that testimony. Do you see that? Some people will look at this testimony right here in this book and they will say, I don’t believe that. I think she was a false prophet. After all she contradicts herself. She can’t get things straight. She thought one thing one time and then she changed it and thought another thing, that can’t be God’s prophet. What did the angels show her was going to cause the shaking? Well, I didn’t read it all so how can you tell me. 
 
She said, "This will have its effect upon the heart of the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the straight truth.” What kind of truth?

(John) Straight.

(Wilfred) Straight truth. He’s going to just say it real soft and behind the door. No, he’s going to pour it forth. Now listen. “Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise up against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among God's people.” Is that clear? Unless you doubt what I was saying, listen.

She says, “I saw that the testimony of the True Witness has not been half heeded.” Who is the true witness?

(John) Jesus.

(Wilfred) And what testimony was she talking about right there in that previous paragraph?

(Several voices) Unintelligible.

(Wilfred) What particular testimony? To the Laodiceans. To the Laodiceans.

“The solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs has been lightly esteemed, if not entirely disregarded. This testimony must work deep repentance; all who truly receive it will obey it and be purified.” There it is again. There’s that commandment test, see? Obey the commandments and what is going to happen? He is going to cleanse the sanctuary. They will be purified. Can’t you see? So, it’s the Laodicean message. And there is truth to come out of the Laodicean message. A straight testimony and some people are going to pour it forth and some people are going to rise up against it, they won’t bear it. And that will cause a shaking among God’s people. Got that?

(A woman) When Jesus spoke directly to his people ... Unintelligible

(Wilfred) How does Jesus normally speak? We have been studying about that in our Sabbath school lessons.

(John) Through his prophets.

(Same woman) Yes but they are going to get what they say from somewhere.

(Wilfred) Where did Sister White get it from?

(Same woman) She got it directly.

(Wilfred) All right. Where are we going to get what Sister White was shown?

(Several voices) From her books.

(Wilfred) From her books. Did she understand everything that she wrote?

(Same woman) No.

(Wilfred) Where are we going to get the understanding of that from?

(John) The Holy Spirit.

(Wilfred) And people who get the Holy Spirit that enables them to understand things that were not understood before what kind of people are they? They are seers aren’t they? People who see. And what is another name for seer?

(Same woman) Prophet.

(Wilfred) One who receives a message of truth from God and shares it with somebody else. It isn’t necessarily foretelling the future that’s a part of it. Sister White was a prophet but she was more than a prophet, she was a messenger. What’s going to happen when the Spirit is poured upon God’s people in Joel chapter 2?

(John) And your sons and daughters shall prophesy.

(Wilfred) And your...?

(John) Old men shall see dreams and young men shall see visions.

(Wilfred) Shall see visions. Now it’s going to happen. Now what are you going to say when somebody gets something and brings it to you?

(Larry) You have to test it.

(Wilfred) Good for you. You‘ve got to test it.

(John) If they speak not according to this word .....

(Wilfred) There’s no light in them. Now suppose it turns out that it looks pretty solid. What are you going to do about it?

(John) Accept it. If you don’t you've missed the boat because you have rejected it.

(Wilfred) Why is God going to bring new truth to his people?

(John) To test them.

(Wilfred) We’ve got a statement on that, I’m going to give you some stuff tonight and it will be in there you can read it for yourself.

(Another man) It will be a bases for future truth.

(Wilfred) Right. It will be a bases for future truth. Because new truth is not independent of the old, she says. It unfolds from the old and rests upon it in fact it depends upon the old for it’s meaning. But those who neglect the new she says, Christ’s Object Lessons, to them the old truth will become but a lifeless form. I mean, it will lose it’s meaning because it doesn’t fit in anymore. It's gone. You’ve got to have the added thing to it to understand it in terms of the present situation.

Let’s look at this message. It’s in Revelation chapter 3 and it starts at 14.

14 “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;” Some people think that means that Christ was the first person created. What do we understand?

(John) He was the one that began the creating.

(Wilfred) Yes. Christ was not created He was born of God.

15 “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot:” Now here’s a description of you, take it to heart here. You’re not cold and you’re not hot. “I would thou wert cold or hot.” What would God like? He rather you would be one way or the other. What’s He going to do to make you make a decision to be either hot or cold?

(John) Bring a test on you. And what’s the test going to be?

(A man) New truth.

(Wilfred) Yes, that’s one of the major issues that will come before the church. But later on what’s going to develop into?

(John) The Sabbath truth.

(Wilfred) Yes, and what’s going to be involved with this test as well as just intellectual understanding?

(Larry) Love of the brethren.

(Wilfred) Love of the brethren. Yes, that’s right. And it goes a little beyond this yet. What’s going to happen if one brother just can’t agree with you and it really gets under his skin?

(Another man) He’s going to persecute you..

(Wilfred) He’s going to persecute you. Right. Where do you think persecution is going to start from?

(John) From inside the church.

(Wilfred) Right inside, probably inside your own home. Many of you will experience persecution from within your own relatives. And certainly within the household of faith there will be persecution.

16 “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot,” The Lord is going to do something and He tells you very plainly what his going to do. “I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Now, right here is the jumping off point for another one of these things that can be contradictory which is a gateway to new truth. For instance, if He is going to spue you out of his mouth in the sense that most of us have thought about for a number of years and which I am not denying because it figuratively has a lesson in it. It is not literally accurate. There’s no place in the Bible where God’s people are portrayed as being in his mouth. But we have the idea that somehow that God is going to spit us out of his mouth. And we jump to the conclusion that this means He is going to reject us. If that is true we may as well give up right now. He doesn’t say I’m going to spue you out if you don’t do something or if you do something. He doesn’t say that. He says because you are lukewarm, and you are, I’m going to spue you out of my mouth. How do I know that you are lukewarm? Because He says so. He says you are lukewarm. He is talking to the Laodiceans. You are lukewarm and because you are lukewarm I’m going to spue you out of my mouth, no ifs ands or buts.

We are the ones, that because we don’t understand what this passage means, we are the ones to come to conclusions like Sister White did. She couldn’t understand this shut door thing, surely, surely there are people still to come into the church yet. They could still hear the gospel message they could still repent there must be still a Spirit around. Surely then the door can’t be shut and that is the thing she decided along with the rest of the band. Right? And the Lord set her straight. Now look, we have come to the conclusion, as a people, that the Lord is going to spit us out of his mouth. And I’m not so sure but which you can’t find it in the Spirit of Prophesy, maybe not in just so many words.

Why do we come to this conclusion? Because we don’t understand it, that’s why. And we want to rationalize, we’ve got to come to something to keep comfortable you know, we’ve got to have an answer so we cook one up if we have to. But the solution is so simple that I am amazed, I’m literally amazed that somebody hasn’t tumbled onto it and made a big splash of it because there are two ways you can spue. Spue means spit. I’m looking at my finger, my thumb, I can spue my thumb out of my mouth in two different ways. I can put my thumb in my mouth and spit it out. I spued my thumb out of my mouth. Or I can put my thumb there and I can spue my thumb out of my mouth with spittle. Do you understand? After all what’s in my mouth? Well, my tongue, my teeth, my gums, but I can’t, yet, spit my teeth out, or my gums, or my tongue, I can stick it out but I can’t spue it. But there is one thing in there that I can get rid of and that is my spittle and so I can spue it.

Now listen. God is going to spue his lukewarm Laodiceans.....

God is going to spue his people out of his mouth with whatever is in his mouth. And when we are dealing with Bible truth we have to let the Bible explain what its talking about. Have you ever found what the Bible says is in the mouth of the Lord? It’s right there in Revelation. I think I even have it marked here in case I might need it sometime. How about looking at Revelation 1:16 “And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: “ I want you to get that “two-edged”, that’s significant too. The Bible doesn’t waste anything it’s under control. Strict control. “And his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.”

What went out of his mouth?

(John) A sharp two-edged sword.

(Wilfred) All right now there is another one here, Isaiah 11:4, There is more in Revelation but I just wanted to check this one. Oh yes, here’s one. Isaiah 11:4, “But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.” Does that give you a key as to what this sword represents?

Yes, we can find some better ones than that one actually if you give it to us quite straight I think.

Look at Revelation 2:16, “Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” What does the Lord use mouth-sword for? To fight.

Now, Revelation 19:15 I have here. “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations:” Now the Lord is going to smite the nations with this sword that comes out of his mouth. Is it a literal sword that He’s going to bring against them? What is it?

(A woman) His truth.

(Wilfred) His truth. And another one Hosea 6:5, Ok, that’s the one I want. Have you got this one Hosea 6:5? It says, “Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets;” What does hewed mean?

(John) Cut.

(Wilfred) Yes, Chiseled out and cut, shaped up. What has He done with his people? He shaped them up with his prophets. Now what did the prophets come with? Well, he goes on. “I have slain them by the words of my mouth:” So what is it that He is really slaying his people with? His sword, and what is his sword?

(John) His Word.

(Wilfred) His Word that comes out of his mouth. How many edges has it got?

(John) Two.

(Wilfred) Two. What does Paul say about the sword of his Spirit?

(John) It’s the Word of God.

(Wilfred) And it’s a sharp two-edged sword.

Now, will you go over to Ezekiel 21:  We are dealing here with something that is very vital. Down to verse 8. “Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 9 Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished: 10 It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter;” Remember Hosea 6: 5 what did that say? What did the Lord slay his people with?

(John) His prophets.

(Wilfred) His Word, his Word, his Word. That’s right. Now here he says, a sword is sharpened and also furbished. It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter.

Now this is the sword of the Lord. It is the Word of his mouth that He is going to spue upon his Laodicean people. Why? Because they are lukewarm. That’s why. He wants them to be either hot or cold. He wants them to make a choice. Either for or against. He is going to bring a test upon them with his sword that will cause them to have to make a decision one way or the other so they won’t be lukewarm anymore. They are either going to go all out for God or they are going all the other way from God. Do you get the point? Let’s read it. What’s happened to the sword of the Lord? Sharpened and furbished. Now when a sword is sharpened, you know that it cuts better don’t you? And what does it say over there in the New Testament about that sword? Cutting even to the dividing the bones and the marrow it’s going to go down deep. Your going to recognize things in yourself that you never saw. You are going to reach a point where you may even say, I hate myself for what I am. The Bible says you are going to loathe yourself for your iniquities. Your iniquities are going to be shown up by the sharpened sword of the Lord. It’s going to penetrate deeper, it’s going to cut where it never cut before. Why is the Lord doing this? Because He is in the process of cleansing the sanctuary of your soul, your temple. He wants it purified. He can’t purify it without you making some decisions. You are the only one who can get rid of sin in your life, with your decision. And if you don’t know what the sin is how can you get rid of it. So the sword is going to come and point out some things that you never saw and then you’ve got to make a decision. You can go with him into the most holy apartment or you can stay out. You can go through that open door or you can wait until that door is shut and you won’t get in there.

The sword is also furbished, what does that mean?

(John) Polished,

(Wilfred) Polished. Now you know that when metal is polished it has a different characteristic with reference to light, what does it do?

(Several voices at once) Unintelligible

(Wilfred) It reflects more light and more clearly doesn’t it? It sparkles. Can you see the significance? God’s truth, his Word is going to get polished that it may glitter, that you can see light coming out of there that you never saw before. You didn’t know it was that bright. Why, I have never seen that before. How come I didn’t see that? That’s tremendous, there it is I have read it all these years, I went right over it and it was just so many words. Now I see it. Furbished, God’s sword is going to be furbished when He brings it upon his people. You don’t think He is gong to bring it upon his people? Let’s read on. “It is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.” Now I won’t touch on that because it is a controversial little statement. But to contemn means to by-pass, sort of spurn, you know, to just not pay any attention to it, to just go on by it. But don’t worry about that part, let’s go on. 11 “And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.”

Oh can I bypass now to Ezekiel 9? We’ll come back here, just hold tight. Without reading it all let me tell you that Sister White verified that this chapter is the description of the sealing of God’s people. That’s what it is and it’s a tremendous chapter. “1 He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand.” Let me explain to you that the city is the city of Jerusalem you’ll find that a little latter on in the passage. Sister White says that this city is God’s church. You’ll find that in her writings. Now these men are to be caused to come near. Which men?

(Another man) The ones that have charge. 

(Wilfred) The ones that have charge over the city. These men are to come near. Every man with what in his hand?

(John) A slaughtering weapon.

(Wilfred) A destroying weapon in his hand, a breaking in pieces weapon the margin says. Do you know what kind of a weapon those who have charge over God’s people have in their hands? The Word of God. Didn’t it say over here that the sword was to be given into their hands to be handled? Now they are to come forth with this weapon in their hand. How many of them? Six, well this is a symbolic number of course. What are they to do? Well, let’s read on. 2 “And, behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter weapon in his hand; (I read the margin). “And one man among them was clothed with linen,” What does that represent?

(John) The righteousness of Christ.

(Wilfred) The righteousness of Christ. “With a writer's inkhorn by his side:” What do you use a writers inkhorn for?

(Several voices) Unintelligible

(Wilfred) And the horn? What’s in the writer’s inkhorn? Ink!. And what does he need the ink for?

(John) Writing.

(Wilfred) He going to make a mark, to put a mark on people. Listen, “And they went in, and stood beside the brasen altar. 3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer's inkhorn by his side; 4 And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry ” For all the what?

(John) For all the abominations.

(Wilfred) That be done where?

(John) In the midst of Jerusalem.

(Wilfred) Right in the middle of Jerusalem, there are abominations going on. And what is Jerusalem?

(John) The church.

(Wilfred) God’s church. And what’s going on in the midst of this church?

(Several voices) Abominations.

(Wilfred) Abominations. Have you seen any of them creeping in yet? Now when they get in there God is going to call for six men, symbolically, maybe literally, but anyway there will be more than that functioning, with what kind of a thing in their hands?

(John) Slaughtering weapons.

(Wilfred) And what are they? What is their position?

(John) Leaders.

(Wilfred) Yes, now that may or may not mean leaders on the books of the church. It may or may not mean leaders in God’s sight. But they are men who have something in their hand, what is it? The Word of God. The slaughtering weapon of God with which He will smite his people. They’ve got it in their hand.

What’s this man with the writer’s inkhorn?

(John) He’s different.

(Wilfred) He’s different he’s got a writer’s inkhorn. And he is going to go through the midst of the city and pick out those people who are going what?

(John) Sighing and crying.

(Wilfred) Sighing and crying for what?

(John) The abominations.

(Wilfred) For the abominations that are going on. Why are these people sighing and crying for the abominations that are going on in the church. Because they can’t do anything else about it. They have tried and that is the last thing they can do, sigh and cry. And they are distressed. Sister White has comments about it in her writings. I won’t take time to do it tonight I’ve done it before. This is review for some of you.

Now this man goes through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. Do you know what that mark is?

(John) It’s the settling into the truth.

(Wilfred) It’s the mark of truth she says. It’s the mark of truth. So somebody with a writer’s inkhorn is going to go through the midst of the church and put a mark on all those that sigh and cry for the abominations. And the mark is coming out of the book, it’s the Word of God.

(John) It’s a settling into the truth.

(Wilfred) It’s a settling into the truth, that’s right. Let me jump the gun a little bit here. What will settle you into the truth?

(A woman) When you understand it.

(John) And do it.

(Wilfred) When you see it. God’s truth is made up of many pieces. And we’ve been getting these pieces down through the years as pieces of doctrine here and there and everywhere. Each little compartment with its doctrine and we can memorize them all and we think we have the truth. We are neither hot nor cold. And in the Laodicean message He councils to buy of Him gold tired in the fire, that’s faith and love, and there’s a tremendous meaning in there, and white raiment, which is righteousness by faith. But I just gave you tonight a significant point again that it’s one thing to get righteousness imputed, it’s another thing to go into the most holy apartment and get righteousness imparted and the cleansing of the sanctuary, that’s another thing. He councils us to buy of Him gold tired in the fire, and the gold she says is faith and love, and you’re going to need it. You’re going to need faith to hang on to God when you get into the fire of the persecution. You are going to say, Lord where have you gone, what happened, where are you, why are you doing this to me? You can’t do this to me, and the devil will come at you with four barrels in his shotgun and if he can possibly do it he’s going to get you disgruntled against God.

(John) And you’ll need the love for those persecuting you.

(Wilfred) And if your faith is not strong enough you’ll give in. You’ll break, that’s why He councils you to buy of Him gold tired in the fire. Get it while you can and love is the other one. You need faith for imputed righteousness, you’ve got to trust God’s forgiveness of your sins and believe it no matter what or you won’t make it. The moment you lose faith in God’s forgiving power that He can’t forgive this sin, it’s too big, you’ve gone to far. The moment you think that you’re shutting Him out. Don’t do it, hang on to your faith, hang on. And love, what does love do? Well we touched on it tonight, what does love make you do? It puts your faith into action doesn’t it? Faith without works is dead but you can’t make you faith work without love, if you do you are keeping the commandments out of a sense of obligation and she says you are not keeping them at all. Unless you get that love that will motivate you to do the works, your works are unacceptable. So those two things you need. Now the third thing, anoint your eyes with eye salve, and she explains so that you will have discernment. So you can see through the truth. So you can understand.

Let me point out to you then that these pieces of doctrine here they’ve all got to come together and mesh like the parts of a jigsaw puzzle and then you’ll see the picture. There it is. And when you see the picture nobody can tell you that piece is in the wrong place, if it isn’t. Because you can tell by the picture, it either fits or it doesn’t fit. Is that right? And when you see God’s truth come together and integrate you’ll see the picture and you will become settled into the truth. Nobody can budge you, not all the powers of Hades. You’ll still know that it’s the truth even though you may give it up and deny it because you figure you can’t take it. You’ll still know it’s the truth. You can never be shaken on that point. Settled in.

(A woman) How do I buy gold tired in the fire...?

(Wilfred) I would like to by-pass that for right now.

It’s this mark we are talking about. The mark is going to be placed on your forehead. The mark of truth. Nobody can read it except the angels who come afterwards with these destroying weapons. Yes, doesn’t she say angels? Well, don’t get hung up on that now. Who gives the third angels message? The angel or God’s people? Both.

The third angel is in charge of a certain work and he’s ordering it around. He is the one who is supervising it. There is an angel in charge of that message. This man with the writer’s inkhorn, Sister White says she saw an angel come back and report that his work was done that they all had been numbered and sealed, an angel with a writer’s inkhorn she said. So there is an angel involved. But do you see these angels doing all this? Where do you hear the truth from? The angel? Yes.

(John) There is a text Brother in Psalms 149:5 “Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. 6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand;”

(Wilfred) Yes, so you’ve got the sword in your hand. You are the one that carries the message of God to the people. God does not give you an understanding of his truth to be hid under a bushel. You have a responsibility when you learn and understand God’s truth to do with it what God has asked you to do with it. And you make your choice, yes or no. Some people deliberately stay away from meetings where things are being discussed and where truth is being given at all levels they deliberately stay away, why?

(Larry) Then they think they are not responsible.

(Wilfred) Then they think they are not responsible. What I don’t know won’t hurt me. That’s not what Sister White says, not a bit. But with every privilege goes a responsibility. Now what happens? After this man has gone through with the writer’s inkhorn and put the mark on these people. 5 “And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: 6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary.” Pretty plain isn’t it? “Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house. 7 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city. 8 And it came to pass, while they were slaying them, and I was left, that I fell upon my face,” This is Ezekiel talking. “And cried, and said, Ah Lord God! Wilt thou destroy all the ... What?

(John) Residue.

(Wilfred) The residue of Israel. Do you know who the residue is?

(John) The remnant.

(Wilfred) The remnant. Do you know who the remnant are?

(A man) Seventh-day Adventist.

(Wilfred) The last piece of His church.

Are you going to destroy them all Lord? Look at all the ones being slain, are you going to destroy them all?  “In thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem?” Remember Joel chapter 2 about the day of the Lord? And in Jeremiah and Ezekiel you’ll find this about the day of the lord’s wrath, yes. It doesn’t just come upon those who have not accepted the Lord Jesus Christ or those who have rejected it. Brother and Sister it’s going to come on YOU. God is going to permit you, don’t misunderstand me now this isn’t a punishment for sin, God is going to permit you to taste the wrath of God as Jesus tasted it in Gethesemane. You say, Johnson you’re going one-step too far. I say, no I’m not. Because my Bible says, that unless you become a partaker of his sufferings you cannot share his crown and Sister White explains it all. That’s part of the purification process. I can read it to you in Early Writings, as clear as a bell. The purification process, you’re going to taste of the sufferings of Christ. The pouring out of his fury that Christ had to take because of your sins. Now you’re going to get a taste of it, not because of your sins, He took that, but because of his love for you which He has to reveal to you if He is ever going to save you. And the only way He can reveal it after He has thrown upon you all his great mercies and kindness and gifts, the whole bit, the only way He can reveal it to you, really, experimentally, and that is what she says, the experimental knowledge of God is what transforms you. It makes you a son of God, Christ’s Object Lessons, Is to permit you to get a taste of what kind of Love he has for you. And how can you taste it except finding out what he is bearing for you? Do you get the point? That’s why his fury is going to be poured out upon you. So you’ll know what kind of love he’s got. And when it happens you’ll say, Lord, now I understand. Now I understand what you are doing and what you’ve done. Because it says that when you continue in sin you crucify the Son of God afresh. It isn’t just a once and for all experience as far as you’re concerned. He is your high priest bearing your sins and He will continue to bear them until you quit. And you are not going to relieve him of his voluntary commitment to be your surety for eternity, your high priest forever, you are not going to relieve him of that responsibility until you quit sinning. And when you quit, you’ve relieved Him and He can lay down His robes and probation closes. Got the picture?  So He says, While they were doing this poor Ezekiel says, Are you going to kill them all, pouring out your fury upon them? Now look, this doesn’t mean that they are killed physically. This isn’t a physical sword, this is the Word of God which is going to come upon his people and it’s going to make or break them. Either they are going to be humbled and submit to his discipline and be filled with the love of God so that they can love their brethren and their enemies, their persecutors, or they are going to rebel. I won’t take it. They’re either going to be hot or cold.

(A woman) How do we really understand what you’re talking about?

(Wilfred) I don’t know. Do you understand?

(Same woman) I do because you are telling me.

(Wilfred) Then why do you think I’m doing it?

(Same woman) Well, when it happens to other people...

(Wilfred) You tell them. Isn’t that the way God has always done it? I could read it to you. When God has a special message for his people in an emergency, and we are in one, it starts with a little, little, bit, you know, like a tiny grain of mustard seed. Its adherents are very few she says. And by the world loving and world conforming church they are despised and rejected. You don’t want to do it, say no. If you want to do it say yes and God will take care of the rest.

(Another man) Are they sealed before the slaying?

(Wilfred) You’re asking another one of these conundrums. In some places Sister White places the sealing before the shaking and in other places she places the sealing after the shaking and in other places it goes along with the same time. So there is a sealing that has gone on ever since the time of the disciples. So it depends on just what sealing you’re talking about. And I am not prepared at the moment to go into that to delineate, in fact I don’t think I can even do it. I don’t think I have given it enough thought to really put out that detail. All I’m concerned about is the fact that you understand that there is to be a shaking among God’s people and that there is to be a sealing. And there is a part of the sealing that goes on before the shaking or else they would be shaken out. And then there is a part of sealing goes on after the shaking and some during it. But do you get the picture now, what happens to the rest of these five other fellows that have this sword in their hand? What have they got in their hand? A destroying weapon, what is it.

(John) The Bible.

(Wilfred) The Bible. The Word of God. What are they using it for?

(John) To slay.

(Wilfred) And what does that mean? Literally?

(Another man) To separate.

(Wilfred) Separate?

(Another man) In verse 5 it says do not spare neither pity.....people are sealed... Unintelligible

(John) It seems to me brother Johnson that the five men, and Sister White says, five men somewhere in the Testimonies for the Churches. Their work is in apposition or antithesis to the man with the writer’s inkhorn.

(Wilfred) That’s right.

(John) He’s clothed in the righteousness of Christ and places a mark in the their forehead and these men follow after using the same weapons destroying or trying to undo the work that he has done. That’s the way I see it.

(Wilfred) I think you are very close to the truth. It’s the same message but it’s brought upon God’s people as a test. And I can read it. It will separate and the test involves this idea of brotherly love. Those who see and understand will have no problem. But when you meet somebody who doesn’t see eye to eye, what do you do about it? God’s people will love, the devil’s won’t. Now there may be two of God’s people who don’t see eye to eye, both may be saved, But you see, this one here, he sees both sides to one of those conundrums, one of those contradictions, this fellow sees only one side or this fellow sees one side and the other fellow sees the other side.

(A woman) Will there ever be a time when everybody will be completely united?

(Wilfred) The hundred and forty four thousand will.

(Same woman) When will that...

(Wilfred) By the time probation closes that will be pretty well cleared up. Because they’ll see the truth, they’re going to get this mark, see, every one of them and they are going to be settled into the truth.

(Same woman) Then they will have the complete truth, everyone will have the complete truth including the hundred and forty four thousand...

(Wilfred) Well, there again what does complete mean? Truth is ever expanding.

(Same woman) Well, God says that we will be brought into the fullness of the truth or something to that effect. Isn’t that what that means?

(Wilfred) It’s complete for the work that has to be done at that point and time. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that every one of these people will understand exactly the same in every single respect. I think that’s going a little too far. We are all different, our minds are made differently and I think God assigns certain areas of truth as a specialty to you, other areas of truth as a specialty to you and so on, you see, each one has a different area that maybe he understands better than somebody else because of our different talents. But there are certain things that will be a unifying thing, there’s one truth that will unit everybody and that’s the Sabbath truth. And that has to do with allegiance to God, that’s fundamental.

Well, maybe I can leave the rest of that and you can read it yourselves. Go back to Ezekiel chapter 21 we want to finish this before that tape runs out. Ezekiel 21:11 “And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.” .... And I tied that in with these five men back in Ezekiel chapter 9 who are going to be wielding this sword upon God’s people as the man with the writer’s inkhorn has gone through putting a mark on the people who are sighing and cry for the abominations. Now these others are coming through with the sword and the ones that do not have the seal are going to be slain, figuratively, ultimately, and literally, because they’ll all go to their graves, they won’t go through the seven last plagues. And depending on their relationship to God whether they have gone as far as they can go and they maintain their faithfulness unto death, you know, he that is faithful unto death will receive a crown of life. Maybe they couldn’t go on any further, they just couldn’t make it any further. The Lord puts them in the grave and in Corinthians it says there that their works will be destroyed but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be destroyed that they will be saved. I read you that text and I think that goes to different degrees.

Those who reject the Lord completely and his truth completely they of course will, some go to their graves and some go through the seven last plagues just like the righteous. Some go to their graves some go through the seven last plagues.

During the seven last plagues there will only be those two groups, those who are all out for God and those who are all out for the devil. And the great controversy reaches its climax and the battle is fought within the minds of those people. So He says, 12 “Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon” The wicked. What does it say?

(John) My people.

(Wilfred) “It shall be upon my people, It shall be upon all the princes of Israel: “ What?

(A man) .....sword

(Wilfred) Not just that.

(A man) Terrors.

(Wilfred) Terrors. “Terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh. 13 Because it is a ...?”

(John) Trial.

(Wilfred) Ok there it is. Now listen. “Terrors by reason of the sword.” Can’t I take just a minute to read you what Joel said? Joel 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain:” Where is the alarm to be sounded?

(John) In the church.

(Wilfred) In God’s holy mountain. “Let all the inhabitants of the land” Rejoice and be merry? Tremble. Why? “For the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;” What kind of a day is it? 2 “A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains:” What kind of a day? A very bad day. Right? And just while you are there look at verse 11, what does it say in the last part of verse 11 after the colon? “For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? Now back to 2 again. What did he contrast this terrible day with? ‘A great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.” Who is he talking about?

(Same woman) The hundred and forty four thousand.

(Wilfred) The hundred and forty four thousand. The strongest people that He has ever had. Down in verse 11 what does he say they are going to be doing? 11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army:” Can you see the sword? The Lord shall what? Utter his voice before his army:” Where does his voice come from? Out of his mouth. What is he going to do to the Laodiceans who are neither hot nor cold? Spue them out of his mouth. What comes out of his mouth?

(John) His sword.

(Wilfred) His sword which is his? Now listen, here is the Lord uttering his voice before his army, “for his camp is very great: for he is strong that” What?

(John) That executeth his word.

(Wilfred) Who is He talking about?

(John) The hundred and forty four thousand.

(Wilfred) What do they do with respect to Christ going into the most holy? They see in there what? The commandments and what do they do with them? They keep them and he exercises his Word, what happens to these people? They are strong that executeth his Word. Can’t you see the connections here? “For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?” And then he goes on to say what you should do about it. And he goes on to tell you about the former and the latter rain. And then you might just take a squint at Malachi chapter 4 verse 5. What’s going to happen before that dreadful day comes?

(John) I will send you Elijah the prophet.

(Wilfred) And what did Sister White say with reference to John the Baptist who began this message?

(John) I say Elias has come.

(Wilfred) All right. And what does she say is going to happen with reference to that message? It’s going to be repeated. That’s what she says. When?

(John) Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

(Wilfred) Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Now where is the great and dreadful day of the Lord relative to us? It’s right here. It’s right in front of us. What can we expect to happen now?

(Same woman) Unintelligible

(Wilfred) All right. What is the message? What did Jesus say He was to do?

(John) Turn the hearts and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just.

(Wilfred) Can you see the connection to that most holy again and those commandments? Can you see that? What else did Jesus say? When He came down from the Mount of Transfiguration and the disciples said, How come the Jews talk about Elijah? What did Jesus say?

(John) He says Elias has come.

(Wilfred) No, He said something else.

(Several attempts made)

(Wilfred) You missed the point. Let’s read it, over in Matthew. Please don’t feel angry at me for being so point blank with you I know you’ll forgive me. I’m just trying to get points across here and any devise that I can use to help you to see it is well worthwhile and that’s the only reason I am using these devises. I’m not trying to be critical. Turn to Matthew chapter 17. The answers you gave me are perfectly correct but there is one point that I think you need to see. Verse 10 “And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come,” And what’s he going to do?

(John) Restore all things.

(Wilfred) Now this is one that you should memorize. John the Baptist did not restore all things. Right or wrong? When are all things going to be restored? Well, first of all, what are “All things”? What was it that God lost?

(John) The allegiance of his people.

(Wilfred) The allegiance of his people. What must be restored? The allegiance of his people. When it is restored the marriage union is consummated. The Kingdom is restored. The subjects are made up. Do you get it? Now something has got to happen before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord to bring about that restoration. Are you getting the picture?

(Same woman) Unintelligible

(Wilfred) That’s right. And how are they going to see him?

(John) Through his Word?

(Wilfred) Word.

(Many voices speaking at the same time)

(Wilfred) AHHHH, We’ve got another text here. What I am trying to do with you people is to put those pieces together in that jigsaw puzzle. We’ve gone over all these things but I want to get them together. I want you to click them. Malachi chapter 3, Sister White says that this passage in Malachi 3 is the same as the one of the Bridegroom, coming of the Bridegroom and the opening of the door to the most holy apartment are all the same thing. She says it in Great Controversy. I read it to you last week. It’s on the tape. Now can you see the connection?

1 “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. 2 But who may abide the day of his coming?” Do you see that reference to Joel? “Who may abide the day of his coming?” Who’s coming? The messenger of the Covenant. Now, Sister White says that means that Jesus went from the holy to the most holy. Is that the coming you have to be so scared about and wonder whether you can stand? Yes, because it’s a judgment. But that’s only one facet. That’s just one facet. It applies to John the Baptist. He was the messenger of the Covenant whom came to prepare the way for the Lord in his first advent. But God has another coming, the Second Advent. Ahhhh, but we missed one. There is one in between there.

(Another man) His coming to his temple.

(Wilfred) His coming to his temple. You know where He went into the most holy in 1844 but what is the real temple?

(John) We are.

(Wilfred) There. Have you heard of the messenger of the Covenant coming suddenly to his temple to purify and cleansed the sons of Levi? It’s right there in Malachi chapter 3. Who are the sons of Levi? Go back to Exodus, when Moses came down from the mount with those ten commandments and he saw that golden calf down there. Do you remember what he did with it? He broke it in pieces and scattered it in the water. Then he said to those people, who is on the Lord’s side? Is there anybody here who’ll forsake all their idols and come and stand with me on the Lord’s side? And who came?

(Several voices) The sons of Levi.

(Wilfred) Now the messenger of the Covenant is coming to God’s people today. Sister White says it’s a restoration of the law of God in the heart. Get that? The law of God in the Heart. Moses, you see, had the law on tables of stone, Malachi 4;4. “Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel with the statutes and judgments.” The Old Covenant. Remember that. That’s the law. 5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord” And what is his work? To restore all things, allegiance to that law. That’s the work. But Sister White says, In the New Covenant, see Moses had the Old Covenant, and you remember that we talked about those two witnesses and that Elijah represents the New and Moses the Old, remember we went up to that study? What does Elijah represent with reference to this? Moses represents Christ who brought the literal commandments on two literal tables of stone to give to literal Israel on literal Sinai. What does Elijah represent? The Holy Spirit who comes to spiritual Israel to write the spiritual Law of love on the tables of the heart. You don’t believe that? It’s in the Spirit of Prophesy. The Holy Spirit is the messenger of the Covenant, the New Covenant who comes to write it on the tables of the heart. What does it say in the New Covenant? They shall be my people and I will be there God, does that not spell allegiance? They shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest of them. Does that not spell an experience whereby they learned what kind of a god God is? I will forgive their iniquity and remember their sins no more. Does that spell the sanctuary above where you enter the first door and get your sins forgiven and then you enter the second door and get it all cleaned out. And what is the last one? The law is written in the heart. That’s it, that’s the New Covenant. Four things that Paul brings out and that Jeremiah brings out. It all ties together Brothers and Sisters.

Back to Malachi chapter 3

1 “He shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant,” Now before the messenger of the Covenant comes, THE WAY HAS GOT TO BE PREPARED. Have you got that? Then the messenger of the Covenant, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the latter rain will happen. Now what is the preparation? The same as John the Baptist. Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. We’ve already gone through a study on the preparation to receive the latter rain. That’s it. That’s it. You have to prepare to receive the latter rain. And when you are prepared it will come. And what’s it going to do? It says here, who’s going to abide that day? So it’s not going to be an easy day. “Who shall stand when he appeareth?” Why is it going to be hard? “For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:” What’s a refiner’s fire good for? Purifying! What’s fuller’s soap good for?

(A woman) Cleaning.

(Wilfred) Making it white. Gets your garment cleaned up. That’s what it's for. Now that’s the day of the Lord that’s coming and it’s going to do that, it’s going to be a tough day. That’s what Joel said. It’s going to be hard, terrible. What’s the word he uses in Ezekiel? “Terrors by reason of the sword.” That furbished sword that’s going to show you where all the dirt is that has to be cleaned out.

In the same verse where he talks about the terror what does he say about the people? A strong people in perfect order a people that there has never been any greater than that. That’s what he said in Joel. Can’t you see what God is trying to do? Why do you think I’m sitting here talking to you like this? Because God gave me that picture many, many, years ago and he said, Johnson I want you to do that for me.

Oh, let me go back one step further. When I became an Adventist I couldn’t understand the message. There was something in there that attracted me I thought it must be right, it’s better than anything else I’ve seen and I took it up. But I couldn’t understand God’s government, I didn’t understand it. I didn’t understand the plain of Salvation. I didn’t understand the six-day creation. I didn’t believe in the Spirit of Prophesy. I didn’t believe in miracles. And I was an Adventist for several years like that and it finally got to me I though that I am a hypocrite. Here I am teaching Sabbath School classes and taking services and doing all sorts of things for the church, and I am just a shell just sputtering this stuff out I don’t really understand it and know what I am talking about. And I went to God and I said, Lord this isn’t good, I said that if you can do one thing for me, make that Bible as plain to me as my science text books are and I got good marks in those, so that I can understand our truth then I can be of some value to you. But I can’t go out as a missionary and try to show people how to be saved when I don’t even know what it is myself. Is that a reasonable prayer? Well, I went a little further than that I did what I don’t usually do and I don’t think that we should normally do it but when we do do it the Bible says you’d better honor it. I made a bargain with God. I made a proposition to Him. But He does say prove Me. I said Lord, if you will do that, and I think my conclusion was very logical, I said then I would be in a position to be of some value to you and I’ll do anything you ask me to do, but I don’t want to go to Africa as a missionary. And I was sincere in that and the Lord took me up on it. And it wasn’t very long before this book began to shine out, the sword began to take on a glitter and I saw those things and they were a plain as day and I got settled into the truth so that nobody could move me. But as soon as I opened my mouth about it and starting talking about it there were fireworks. So I stumbled on to Sister White’s instruction; if anybody tries to go too far ahead of the people he is going to have to retrace every step, and I know what that means. Some of these things I am sharing with you I have understood for more than thirty years. And I have known that it was going to happen and how it was going to happen and where it was going to happen and what part I was to have in it. I have known all that. And I have shared it with some people, a few to my sorrow and I suffered for it ever since. I wouldn’t want to tell you some of the things that were said about me, but that’s all right. How are you gong to understand what Jesus went through unless you share it and you have to be humbled. But let me tell you one thing; when the time comes for God’s work to be done those who are surrendered and submitted to Him are going to do it and that’s the only reason I am sitting here tonight.

I made a vow with God, He performed his part far greater than anything I expected and now He says it’s time for you to do your part and I’m doing it and may God help you to see it. I am of no value I’m nothing only in so far as I commit myself to God. I couldn’t tell you anything if God hadn’t given it to me, not a thing. I’m not telling you what I understand I am telling you what God gave to me to understand and it’s coming right out of the books. If it isn’t don’t take it. Don’t take it because I say it. I’ve made my mistakes and I’m sure you’ve made yours and I’m not saying that I won’t make any more from here on in because I am just as human as you are. But believe you me if any of you can come to me at any time and point out to me that what I have said isn’t right and show it to me from the books I’ll be the first one to acknowledge that I was wrong. And I don’t think I can take a better attitude than that.

But I want to tell you one thing; I’m thoroughly convinced that what I’m telling you is true. It’s absolutely true I’ve seen the picture and it fits, it’s there. And these conundrums and these problems that are showing up from time to time and people are stumbling on to them. I made a list at one time I think about thirty, forty, or fifty of them and maybe God in his providence saw to it that I lost it. I can’t find it. I’ve searched the house for it maybe because He saw that I would talk about too many of them and discourage people and I don’t want to do that. I’ve talked to you about some of them, have I discouraged you? I hope not. I am telling you frankly from the bottom of my heart I’ve got the answers to those problems but I didn’t find them. God gave them to me and then I found them in the books. Then I found them. It’s there. And I’m trying to show you from the books, but that is all I can do. You’ll never see it until God’s Spirit comes to you. There is no way you can understand God’s Word without the Holy Spirit and if you want the Holy Spirit to bring that mark to your forehead fulfill the conditions. You fulfill the conditions and He will fulfill his. I know because I know what He has done for me. I could spent all night giving you a personal testimony but that wouldn’t get me very far because there are people who would just criticize it up and down so what profit would it be?

But I am trying to share with you things that are in the book and I am just telling you briefly why I am doing it because the day of the Lord is here and somebody has got to do it. And God asked me if I would do it for Him thirty-five years ago and I said I would, but I didn’t know what I was saying then and I didn’t know what I was going to have to go through for those years in order to do it. If I had I think I would have said no. But thank the Lord I have not gone back on my word through dirt and thick and thin and I’m still getting static today from some of my closest friends. But I’ll preach God’s Word until He takes my breath away come hell or high water. I’ve made my decision, I’m with God and if God says something and He asks me to share it with somebody, I’m going to do it. And I hope you won’t be one who will rise up against the testimony.

I have just given you a little glimpse of some of the things in the Laodicean message tonight, I haven’t finished it but the tape's just about gone and I am going to have to quit. So I can’t go any further but you can go a lot further than that. You can go to this same book and you can go to the same Lord and you can make the same promises that I made and I hope you do it. God needs pioneers to fulfill the Elijah message today. He needs John the Baptists who are willing to come out in the open and rebuke his people for their sins and bless our pastor who has just left us and he did it. And he took more dirt than any Pastor that’s ever been here. But he never let it get him down. Bless his heart. Sure, you can find faults with everybody. Don’t look at the faults look at the message and look at the results of the message.

She says that “When the doctrine we accept kills sin in the heart, purifies the soul from defilement, bears fruit unto holiness, we may know that it is the truth of God.” Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing page 147. Now you test it yourself. I know what its done for me and I’m not perfect but I know what its done for me. And if it has done the same for you and if you are willing to do the same as I am doing and share the truth that God has then sooner or later that spirit is going to start pouring out and the sealing is going to take place and the shaking is going to take place and the thing is going to be finished and we are going to go home and I’m all for it. And if I don’t make it don’t stop because of that keep right on going. And if you don’t make it I won’t stop I’ll keep right on going till I’m through.

I’m not going to ask you to raise hands or stand up or anything like that I just don’t find myself able to do these things. You have to make your decision between you and God. It doesn’t matter whether I know about it or not. But it does matter whether you make it, that’s important.

I haven’t told you everything, I’ve got more things to tell you and if and when I do tell you you’ll understand why it’s going to be a tough day. Because the truth that’s coming upon God’s people is a truth that’s going to separate and divide. It’s going to separate and divide.
